How to upgrade or downgrade your VPN Super plan
Want to change your subscription? You can move to a longer plan for better value, or a shorter one to reduce your commitment. Here's how to change your plan and what to expect. The main thing to know upfront: upgrades take effect immediately, while downgrades start when your current plan ends.
VPN Super offers plans for different durations. You can check current prices on the pricing page.
Key differences in upgrades and downgrades
- When it takes effect: Upgrades apply immediately. Downgrades apply when your current plan ends.
- Billing: Upgrades are charged now, minus a prorated credit for unused time. Downgrades are paid in advance; the shorter plan starts at the end of your term.
- Your access: Upgrades extend your access right away. Downgrades leave your access unchanged until your current plan ends.
- Refunds: Upgrades need no refund—your unused time becomes a credit. Downgrades don't refund unused time on your current plan.
How to change your plan
These steps are the same whether you're upgrading or downgrading:
- Go to Account & billing in your VPN Super account. Don't have an account yet? Read the help article for creating your VPN Super account.
- Select "Change Plan." A pop-up shows the plans available to you.
- Choose the plan you want—a longer one to upgrade, or a shorter one to downgrade.
- Review the order summary on the checkout page. Your current payment method is filled in automatically; you can change it if you like.
- Select "Change Plan" to confirm.
What happens next depends on whether you upgraded or downgraded (see below). Either way, you'll get an email confirmation and an updated invoice, and your account will show the change.
If you upgrade
Your upgrade takes effect immediately:
- Your longer plan and new billing cycle start from today.
- You get a prorated credit for the unused time on your current plan, which is applied to the price of the new plan.
- Your better rate applies right away.
How the prorated credit works: say you're 10 days into a 1-month plan, with 20 days left. You get credit for those unused 20 days—two-thirds of what you paid—and that amount is deducted from the price of the longer plan.
Note: If you're upgrading on the last day of your plan, there's no credit since you've used the full term, so you pay the standard price for the new plan. It starts immediately.
If you downgrade
Your downgrade is scheduled, not immediate:
- You keep full access to your current plan until it ends.
- Your shorter plan starts the day your current plan expires.
- You pay for the shorter plan in advance, and there's no refund for unused time on your current plan.
Example timeline: your 12-month plan expires on December 31. You schedule a downgrade to a 1-month plan on November 15. You keep full access until December 31, and your 1-month plan begins on January 1.
Refunds and the 30-day money-back guarantee
- Upgrades keep your refund eligibility if your original subscription was purchased within the last 30 days, and both the original purchase and the upgrade fall inside that window. A refund then covers everything you paid.
- Downgrades usually fall outside the window, because eligibility runs from your original purchase date, not the downgrade date. Contact Support if you're unsure about your timing.
Troubleshooting common issues
- Your payment didn't go through. You'll be returned to the checkout page with a message explaining what to fix. Update your details or try another payment method, then submit again. Your current plan keeps running until a payment succeeds, and you'll get an email about the failed payment. Common causes are an expired card, insufficient funds, a bank blocking international transactions, or a billing address mismatch. For more details, see: What to do if your payment fails.
- You don't see the "Change Plan" option. Make sure your subscription is active—a recent plan change can briefly restrict further changes. Contact Support if it's still missing.
- Your upgrade isn't showing yet. Refresh your account page; the change can take a moment to reflect. Check your confirmation email, and contact Support if it hasn't appeared within 30 minutes.
Which one is right for you?
Consider upgrading if you're happy with the service, want better value on a longer plan, are still within the 30-day guarantee, or have significant time left on your current plan (which means a bigger prorated credit).
Consider downgrading if you want to reduce your commitment or if your current plan is nearing its end (so you pay less in advance).
Frequently asked questions
Can I change my plan more than once?
Yes. You can upgrade or downgrade as often as you need.
Will a plan change affect my VPN access?
An upgrade extends your access immediately. A downgrade doesn't take effect until your current plan ends.
What if I change my mind after a plan change?
After an upgrade, you may be eligible for a refund if you're within the 30-day guarantee. A scheduled downgrade can be canceled by upgrading again before it takes effect.
Can I change payment methods during a plan change?
Yes. You can update your payment method at checkout.
Do I lose unused time when I upgrade?
No. You get a prorated credit for unused time toward the cost of your new plan.
