What to do if your payment fails

support background

Try this first

This clears up the majority of failed payments:

  1. Re-check your card details—number, expiration date, security code (CVV), and billing address. Make sure the billing address matches your bank records exactly.
  2. Correct anything that’s off and submit the payment again.
  3. Wait for the result before retrying. Submitting repeatedly can trigger your bank’s fraud protection.

If that doesn’t do it, the next section covers the most common reason payments fail.

Why your payment failed (and how to fix it)

Most failures come down to one of these. Start at the top—they're ordered by how often they occur.

Your bank is blocking the charge

Many banks automatically decline international transactions or payments to VPN services as a security measure.

How to fix it:

  • Call your bank and ask them to authorize the payment.
  • Let them know you’re buying a VPN subscription from VPN Super.
  • Check that your card allows international payments, and that you’re under any daily or monthly spending limit.
  • Try the payment again once your bank confirms.

Your card details don't match

Even a small mismatch with your bank’s records can cause a decline.

How to fix it:

  • Enter your name exactly as it appears on the card.
  • Use the exact billing address from your bank statement, including any apartment or unit number.
  • Double-check the state, ZIP, or postal code.
  • Type the details in rather than copy-pasting, which can add stray spaces.

Your payment method isn't supported

Some cards can't be used for this kind of purchase.

How to fix it:

  • Prepaid and gift cards often don’t support international or subscription payments—use a personal debit or credit card instead.
  • Corporate cards sometimes block VPN services. Try a personal card if you have one.
  • Switch card issuer if you can (for example, Visa, Mastercard, or Amex).

A browser issue is getting in the way

Occasionally, the checkout itself is the problem, not your payment method.

How to fix it:

  • Clear your browser cache and cookies, or open the checkout in a private or incognito window.
  • Disable ad blockers and allow pop-ups, which can interfere with payment windows.
  • Try a different browser (Chrome, Firefox, or Safari) and check your internet connection is stable.
  • If you’re connected to a VPN, turn it off for the checkout, then turn it back on afterward.

Try PayPal

If your card keeps failing, PayPal is the most reliable alternative. It works in most countries where cards are restricted, adds buyer protection, and often gets around bank blocks on VPN purchases.

Notes for your situation

While the fixes above work for any payment failure, it's worth noting some common issues that might occur with the following payment scenarios:

  1. Select PayPal as your payment method at checkout.
  2. Sign in to your PayPal account when prompted.
  3. Choose a funding source (bank, card, or balance).
  4. Approve the payment to finish.

After your payment goes through

While the fixes above work for any payment failure, it’s worth noting some common issues that might occur with the following payment scenarios:

  • Buying a new subscription: If the payment fails at checkout, you’ll see a notification bar at the top of the page telling you that we couldn’t complete your payment. Check your payment method, then resubmit the payment.
  • Automatically renewing your subscription: If you run into issues with automatic renewal, don’t worry—your subscription stays active during a grace period while you sort the payment out, so there’s no rush and no interruption. The fastest fix is to update your card in Account & billing Payment details; the payment will then retry automatically. For more information, read our help article for fixing issues with automatic renewal.
  • When upgrading to a longer plan: If the payment fails at checkout, your current subscription stays active, so you’re not at risk of losing access. You’re charged the difference between plans, minus a prorated credit for unused time on your current plan. Update your payment details in Account & billing Payment details, then select “Change plan” to retry.

Frequently asked questions

Why do VPN payments sometimes fail?

Banks often block international transactions or payments to VPN services as a security measure. A quick call to authorize the charge usually fixes it.

Should I keep trying if a payment fails?

Wait 15-30 minutes between attempts to avoid triggering fraud protection, and try a troubleshooting step before each retry.

Will a failed payment affect my account?

No. A failed payment won't affect your account negatively. For renewals, you have a grace period to resolve it.

Can I change payment methods during checkout?

Yes. You can switch between cards and PayPal at checkout without losing your subscription selection.

How long do I have to retry?

For a new purchase or an upgrade, there's no time limit—your current subscription keeps running until an upgrade succeeds. For a renewal, a grace period applies.
