What to do if automatic renewal fails

support background

If your subscription didn't renew automatically, it's usually because your payment was declined for a simple reason like an expired card or a bank block. Your VPN keeps working in the meantime, so you have time to sort it out. Here's what happens and what to do.

What happens when a renewal fails

  • You'll get an email about the failed payment right away.
  • Your VPN keeps working in full during a grace period—all features, no restrictions.
  • VPN Super automatically retries the payment during that window.
  • Two things pause until the payment goes through: you can't change plans, and you can't request a refund.

The grace period, and when VPN Super retries the payment, depends on your plan:

PlanGrace periodPayment retries
1-month7 daysDay 3 and day 7
6-month and 12-month30 daysDay 10 and day 14

If the payment still hasn't gone through when the grace period ends, your subscription expires and can't be reactivated—you'd need to buy a new one. Your account stays open either way.

How to fix a failed renewal

The fastest fix is usually to update your payment details during your grace period, which triggers an immediate retry:

  1. Sign in to your VPN Super account.
  2. Go to "Account & billing" using the side menu.
  3. Under "Payment details", select "Update payment method."
  4. Select "Retry Payment" to charge it right away.
  5. Check your inbox for a confirmation email.

Note: Updating your details retries the payment immediately, but it doesn't extend the grace period. For step-by-step help with each payment type, see our help article on updating your VPN Super payment method.

Common reasons why renewals fail

Most payment failures come down to one of these:

  • An expired card. Keep your card details updated. The system can't retry an expired one, so do this rather than waiting for the next attempt.
  • Your bank blocked the charge. Banks often block international or recurring payments. Call your bank, confirm the VPN Super charge is legitimate, and ask them to allow recurring payments.
  • Insufficient funds or a limit reached. Add funds, pay down your balance, or use a different payment method.
  • Billing address mismatch. Update it to match your bank's records.
  • A PayPal problem. Check that your PayPal account is in good standing with a valid funding source, and reauthorize automatic payments if they've lapsed.

If the payment still won't go through, try a different card or PayPal, use a different browser or a private window, and contact Support if it keeps failing.

If the grace period ends before you fix it

  • Your subscription expires and can't be reactivated.
  • Your account stays open—you can still sign in, view your history, and subscribe again.
  • To restore service, sign in, choose a plan on the pricing page, and pay with a working method. Your service will start immediately.

A few things to know about starting fresh: there's no credit for expired time, current pricing applies (it may differ from before), and a new 30-day money-back guarantee begins with the new subscription.

How to avoid this in future

  • Update your card before it expires, and keep a backup payment method on file.
  • Let your bank know to expect recurring payments to VPN Super.
  • Watch for renewal and payment-failure emails so you can act early.
  • Keep enough funds available before your renewal date.

Frequently asked questions

How long do I have to fix a failed payment?

7 days for 1-month plans, and 30 days for 6-month and 12-month plans.

Are there any late fees?

No. You just pay the regular subscription amount once the payment goes through.

Can I change my payment method during a failed payment?

Yes—and it triggers an immediate retry.

Can I retry the payment manually?

Yes. Updating your payment method retries it right away, outside the automatic schedule.

Will my VPN work during the grace period?

Yes. You keep full access with no restrictions throughout the grace period.

Can I change plans during the grace period?

Not until the payment is resolved.

What if I don't fix it in time?

Your subscription expires and can't be reactivated. You'd need to buy a new one to restore service.

Will a failed payment affect a refund?

Refund requests aren't available during the grace period—only once the payment is resolved or the subscription has expired.
