ITVX not working with VPN

support background

ITVX is one of the more straightforward UK streaming services to access because it only needs a free account. If you're a UK resident traveling and want to watch ITVX from abroad, these tips might help with connection issues.

Before you start: ITVX requires a free account but no UK TV License. If you haven't registered yet, go to itv.com/itvx and sign up first.

Common reasons ITVX might not work with a VPN

  • The server you're on is under load during a high-traffic window
  • ITVX is detecting your VPN traffic and limiting playback

Common errors you might encounter on ITVX

  • Error 01-01 means ITVX can't verify that your connection is coming from the UK. This is normal behavior for VPN users—ITVX checks your connection on every session.
  • Error 10-06 is a general playback error that can appear when ITVX has trouble establishing a stable stream. It's often triggered by the same connection conditions as 01-01.

How to fix common issues

  1. Switch to a UK Premium server. Premium servers are optimized for streaming. Switch to a UK Premium server with a low ms value in the location list for the best ITVX performance.
  2. Try the browser instead of the app. Open itv.com/itvx in Chrome or Safari with VPN Super running. Browser playback is often more stable than the app when connection conditions change.
  3. Refresh your connection. Disconnect and reconnect to VPN Super. Then quit the ITVX app and reopen it—this ensures it connects through the refreshed VPN session.

If you're streaming on your browser, close and reopen the tab, or clear your browser cache.

Note: If ITVX prompts you to share your location, don't allow it. If you've already granted access, you can remove it in your browser's settings for itv.com/itvx.

Experiencing slow or interrupted playback?

If ITVX loads but keeps buffering or dropping to a lower quality, the issue is likely connection speed rather than the VPN server itself.

Check your speed first. Run a speed test at speedtest.net with VPN Super connected. For smooth ITVX playback, you'll need at least 3Mbps for 720p, 6Mbps for 1080p, and 25Mbps for 4K streaming.

If your speed is below these thresholds, try:

  • Switching to a server closer to your physical location. A shorter distance generally means lower latency and faster speeds. Use the ms latency value in the location list to compare servers.
  • Switch from cellular to Wi-Fi. Mobile connections can be inconsistent, so a stable Wi-Fi connection will give you more reliable playback.

Can I watch ITV abroad with a VPN?

ITVX is licensed for UK audiences and requires a UK connection to stream. If you're a UK resident traveling, VPN Super lets you stay connected to ITVX by connecting to a UK server before opening the app or site.

ITVX is simpler to set up than BBC iPlayer: it only requires a free account, no UK TV License. If you haven't registered yet, set up your account at itv.com/itvx before you travel.
