CTV not working with VPN

support background

If you're having trouble streaming on CTV with a VPN, the issue might be your VPN configuration rather than CTV itself. Here's how to fix it.

Common reasons CTV might not work with a VPN

  • The server you're on is under load during a high-traffic window
  • CTV is detecting your VPN traffic and limiting playback
  • CTV free vs. CTV+ content behaving differently under the same VPN connection

How to fix it

  1. Update the VPN Super app to the latest version. Open the app and check for an update notification on the home screen. If none appears, update it on the App Store or Play Store, or download the latest Windows version.
  2. Switch to a Canadian Premium server. Premium servers are optimized for streaming. Switch to a different Canadian server using the ms latency value in the location list to find the fastest one.
  3. Try the browser instead of the app. If the CTV app isn't loading, open ctv.ca in Chrome or Safari with VPN Super active. Browser playback is often more reliable when the app has issues.
  4. Refresh your connection. Disconnect and reconnect to VPN Super. Then quit the CTV app and reopen it—this ensures it connects through the refreshed VPN session. If you're streaming on your browser, close and reopen the tab, or clear your browser cache.
  5. Note: If CTV prompts you to share your location, don't allow it. If you've already granted access, you can remove it in your browser's settings for ctv.ca.

Experiencing slow or interrupted playback?

If CTV loads but keeps buffering or dropping to a lower quality, the issue is likely connection speed rather than the VPN server itself.

Check your speed first. Run a speed test at speedtest.net with VPN Super connected. For smooth CTV playback, you'll need at least 3Mbps for 720p, 6Mbps for 1080p, and 25Mbps for 4K streaming.

If your speed is below these thresholds, try:

  • Switching to a server closer to your physical location. A shorter distance generally means lower latency and faster speeds. Use the ms latency value in the location list to compare servers.
  • Switch from cellular to Wi-Fi. Mobile connections can be inconsistent, so a stable Wi-Fi connection will give you more reliable playback.
