HBO Max not working with VPN

support background

HBO Max won't load, shows an error code, or keeps buffering while VPN Super is connected? This guide covers the most common causes, steps to try, and what to do if playback is slow.

Why isn't HBO Max working with my VPN?

  • The server you're on is busy during a high-traffic window, such as a big season premiere
  • HBO Max is detecting VPN traffic and limiting playback
  • The HBO Max app is still using an old connection, or an outdated version of the app

What can I try if HBO Max isn't working with my VPN?

  1. Update the VPN Super app to the latest version. Open the app and check for an update notification on the home screen. If you don't see one, update it on the App Store or Play Store, or download the latest version.
  2. Switch to a Premium server. Premium servers are built for streaming. If you don't have a Premium subscription yet, you can upgrade here. If a title won't start on your current server, switch to a different one.
  3. Try the browser instead of the app. Open hbomax.com in Chrome or Safari with VPN Super connected.
  4. Refresh your connection. Disconnect and reconnect VPN Super, then quit the HBO Max app and reopen it so it uses the new VPN session. In a browser, close and reopen the tab, or clear your browser cache.

Note: If your browser asks to share your location with hbomax.com, don't allow it. If you've already allowed it, you can remove that permission in your browser settings.

HBO Max showing an error code?

Write the code down before you close the message. Then update the HBO Max app itself from your device's app store, sign out and back in, and try again after step 4. If the same code comes back, include it when you contact us so we can check it faster.

HBO Max buffering or low quality with VPN?

If HBO Max loads but keeps buffering or drops to a lower quality, the cause is usually connection speed rather than the server.

Run a speed test at speedtest.net with VPN Super connected. HBO Max recommends at least 5 Mbps for HD and 50 Mbps for 4K. If your speed is below that:

  • Switch to a server closer to you. A shorter distance usually means faster speeds. Compare servers using the ms latency value in the location list.
  • Switch from mobile data to Wi-Fi. A stable Wi-Fi connection can give more reliable playback.

If your speed is fine but buffering continues, work through steps 1 to 3 above.

Watching HBO Max on a TV?

Most of the steps above also apply on Apple TV and Android TV. For TV-specific troubleshooting, see How to fix common issues on Apple TV or How to fix common issues on Android TV.
