ESPN+ not working with VPN

support background

ESPN+ won't load, shows an error, or freezes during a live game while VPN Super is connected? This guide covers the most common causes, steps to try, and what to do if ESPN+ content stays locked. ESPN+ is now part of the ESPN Select plan in the ESPN app.

Why isn't ESPN+ working with my VPN?

  • The server you're on is busy, which is common right before a big game
  • ESPN+ is detecting VPN traffic and limiting playback
  • The ESPN app is still using an old connection from before you connected

What can I try if ESPN+ isn't working with my VPN?

  1. Update the VPN Super app to the latest version. Open the app and check for an update notification on the home screen. If you don't see one, update it on the App Store or Play Store, or download the latest version.
  2. Switch to a Premium server. Premium servers are built for streaming. If you don't have a Premium subscription yet, you can upgrade here. If a game won't start on your current server, switch to a different one.
  3. Try the browser instead of the app. Open espn.com/watch in Chrome or Safari with VPN Super connected and sign in.
  4. Refresh your connection. Disconnect and reconnect VPN Super, then quit the ESPN app and reopen it so it uses the new VPN session. In a browser, close and reopen the tab, or clear your browser cache.

Note: If your browser asks to share your location with espn.com, don't allow it. If you've already allowed it, you can remove that permission in your browser settings.

Signed in but ESPN+ content is still locked?

ESPN+ streams in the ESPN app, and it only unlocks for the account that holds the subscription. Make sure you're signed in with the same account you used to subscribe, including if you got ESPN Select (formerly ESPN+) through a bundle. Sign out and back in after step 4 if it still shows as locked.

ESPN+ buffering or low quality with VPN?

If ESPN+ loads but keeps buffering or drops to a lower quality, the cause is usually connection speed rather than the server.

Run a speed test at speedtest.net with VPN Super connected. ESPN recommends at least 5 Mbps for HD and 25 Mbps for 4K. If your speed is below that:

  • Switch to a server closer to you. A shorter distance usually means faster speeds. Compare servers using the ms latency value in the location list.
  • Switch from mobile data to Wi-Fi. A stable Wi-Fi connection can give more reliable playback.
  • If your player offers a quality setting, lower it during busy live games until the stream steadies.

If your speed is fine but buffering continues, work through steps 1 to 3 above.

Watching ESPN+ on a TV?

Most of the steps above also apply on Apple TV and Android TV. For TV-specific troubleshooting, see How to fix common issues on Apple TV or How to fix common issues on Android TV.
